USAF designates Northrop Grumman’s Talon CCA as YFQ-48A
The US Air Force has designated the Northrop Grumman Talon Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) as the YFQ-48A. This designation conforms with the Mission Design Series (MDS) for a semi-autonomous prototype aircraft and marks a key step forward in the service’s CCA program, the USAF said in a media release, underscoring its commitment to rapidly deliver next-generation capabilities that meet the urgent and evolving needs of the warfighter.
The MDS designation also highlights the ongoing partnership between the USAF and Northrop Grumman, the service adds, and acknowledges the continued progress of the YFQ-48A as a strong contender in future phases of the CCA program.
The CCA program aims to deliver affordable, advanced semi-autonomous aircraft to complement and augment the Air Force’s 4.5, 5th and 6th generation manned fighter fleet, to enhance operational flexibility and combat effectiveness in an increasingly complex and competitive global security environment, says the USAF.
“We are encouraged by Northrop Grumman’s continued investment in developing advanced semi-autonomous capabilities,” said Brigadier-General Jason Voorheis, Program Executive Officer (PEO) for Fighters and Advanced Aircraft. “Their approach aligns with our strategy to foster competition, drive industry innovation, and deliver cutting-edge technology at speed and scale.”
The CCA program’s acquisition strategy emphasizes continuous competition, providing multiple on-ramps for industry participation. The first phase of the USAF CCA program saw contracts awarded to General Atomics and Anduril Industries to develop their YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A Fury CCA designs, respectively. However the USAF has insisted that there will be more phases of the CCA program, enabling other companies to feature also.
The USAF says this open, competitive approach allows it to leverage the most innovative solutions from across the US defence industrial base to meet the evolving demands of modern warfare. It expects to continually compete for future phases of the program, as it has already done with CCA Increment 1 Engineering and Manufacturing Development and Production contracts, ensuring that the most capable solutions are delivered to the warfighter.
“Northrop Grumman’s commitment to innovation, low-cost manufacturing, and calculated risk-taking aligns perfectly with the CCA acquisition strategy and the Secretary of War’s Acquisition Transformation Strategy,” said Col. Timothy Helfrich, director of the Agile Development Office.
The YFQ-48A Talon is based on Northrop Grumman subsidiary Scaled Composites’ Model 437, which Northrop Grumman is using in optionally crewed form as a test bed for the company’s Project Beacon to test and integrate new autonomous technologies.
