Australia-US Directed Energy Program (AUSDEP) call for research proposals
The US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and US DoD Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD R&E) are seeking bilateral US-Australia proposals for fundamental research in directed energy, particularly in relation to the advancement of high-power laser and microwave systems.
- 2-page white papers due 12 June 2023
- projects will run for three years with up to USD$150,000 per year for each PI (ie up to $900,000 per collaboration over the 3 years)
- US collaborator must be from a US academic institution or DoD laboratory
- Australian collaborator must be from an Australian academic institution
- one application per PI
Suggested Scientific Areas for Fundamental Research under AUSDEP
- High Power Lasers (Continuous Wave or Long Pulse, but not Ultra-short)
– Pulse shaping / compression, power scaling
– Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) suppression/mitigation - Novel wavelengths in both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed lasers
– Raman lasers and high efficiency wavelength conversion
– Near infra-red (NIR), Mid-infrared (MIR) and/or eye-safe lasers - Beam dynamics and propagation
– Adaptive optics and atmospheric compensation
– Beam shaping, multi-beam combination & phasing - Compact high power laser sources
– Semiconductor lasers
– Fiber lasers, fiber amplifiers and novel fiber wavelengths/materials/profiles - High power radio frequency & microwaves
– High frequency / high power amplifiers
– Fast solid state pulsed power
– Gyromagnetic / nonlinear transmission lines
– Materials, components, and manufacturing processes for high power electromagnetism
